Adaptogens are plants and fungi that help our bodies respond to stress, fatigue and our general well-being - to find balance in everyday stress.
They play an essential role in all NOUMEN products. But what exactly are adaptogens, which adaptogens can be found in NOUMEN Skincare and supplements? And above all: What are their benefits? Read on to find the answer to all your questions.
Adapto-what? Adaptogens at a glance
The word adaptogen is derived from the Latin word "adapto" or also the English word "to adapt".
Adaptogen is the general term for various plants that can support the body's resilience in coping with physical and emotional stress.
They have been used in Ayurvedic healing practices for hundreds of years, yet adaptogens are also becoming increasingly important in the Western world due to their properties to reduce stress, relax and boost energy.
The benefits of adaptogens
Adaptogens may help our body build resilience to stress and mitigate its further effects on the body.
How does this work?
When we are faced with a stressor, whether physical or psychological, our bodies go through what is called the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). The GAS is a three-stage response: alarm, resistance and exhaustion. Adaptogens help us stay in the resistance stage longer through a stimulant effect that stops exhaustion. Instead of feeling like we can't go on in the midst of a stressful moment, task or event, we achieve balance and cushion the exhaustion stage.
Which adaptogens do exist?
The best-known herbal adaptogens are ingredients such as Ashwagandha, Lion's Mane, Camu Camu, Panax Ginseng, Rhodiola Rosea, Edelweiss and the Schisandra Berry (Schisandra Chinensis). Many vital mushrooms such as Cordyceps (Cordyceps Militaris) or Holy Basil (Ocimum Sanctum) are also substances that are associated with increasing your resistance and reducing stress.
Adaptogens at NOUMEN
All our products contain adaptogens as effective, active plant substances that help the organism to adapt to physical and emotional stress situations.
Primary Benefit: Mood and Sleep 💆♂️
Found in: NOUMEN Sleep Supplement
Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years to harmonise the body, mind and spirit. It has been clinically proven to help reduce stress and regulate cortisol levels, improve concentration and mental stamina, reduce irritability and stress-related cravings.
Before bed, the root may help our relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep. Researchers suggest that Triethylene glycol, which occurs naturally in the plant, promotes fatigue. Ashwagandha is also said to act on the GABA receptors, which play a key role in the sleep-wake rhythm.
2. Lion’s Mane
Primary Benefit: Brain and Focus 🧠
Found in: NOUMEN Brain Supplement
Lion’s Mane has a unique amino acid balance and contains almost all of the essential protein building blocks that your body cannot produce on its own. One of these building blocks is phenylalanine, which is needed for the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Thus, taking Lion's Mane supports the dopamine level and can increase your concentration and performance.
In addition, Lion's Mane is said to have many other health benefits for your body, such as possibly protecting you from dementia, relieving mild symptoms of depression and anxiety, speeding up recovery from nervous system injuries, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and boosting your immune system.
3. Schisandra Berry
Primary Benefit: Skin 😃
Found in: NOUMEN Skincare
Schisandra is a red berry native to the harshest climates in China. Prized in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a longevity and beautifying berry, this antioxidant-rich tonic repairs the cellular and tissue damage that accelerates the aging process and improves skin and liver health by nourishing them from the inside out. In addition to its primary beauty benefits, Schisandra supports brain, strength and spirit.

Edelweiss has developed many defence mechanisms to survive extreme climatic and environmental conditions (temperature, altitude, sun exposure and dryness). The stem cells of the edelweiss give the skin protective properties. This cultivated plant concentrate has the ability to heal and regenerate tissue and damaged cells through its adaptogenic and antioxidant properties.
5. Camu Camu Berry

The Camu Camu Berry is an incomparable natural source of vitamin C, rich in antioxidants, amino acids, bioflavonoids and micronutrients - substances that are essential for skin and immune health.
